How to Make a Thick Tallow Lotion for Dry, Skin

I’ve been using tallow balm for a while, but for really extra dry skin, it wasn’t enough on its own.

While tallow balm alone can be extremely helpful at locking moisture in, if you don’t have the moisture, your skin can end up more dry or just oiled. That is why I decided to do some experimenting and turn the wonderful tallow balm into a thick moisturizing cream. Please note that this recipe calls for many ingredients. Most are completely eco-certified compliant and naturally derived. A preservative is especially necessary due to the water and oil emulsion. Without the preservative, you risk having mold and bacteria build up and ruining your product.

How I Made This Tallow Lotion

Step 1: Start with the Water

I weighed out my distilled water and glycerin, mixed them together, cover, and set them into a water bath to heat gently.

Before heating, I weighed the container and wrote it down so I could add back any water that evaporated.

Step 2: Melt the Oil

In a separate container, I combined the tallow, shea butter, Ritamulse SCG, cetyl alcohol and sweet almond oil.

That went into the water bath too until everything was fully melted.

Step 3: Combine

Once both are heated and at similar temps (about 100-110 F), add back any water that was lost during heating.

Combined and use an immersion blender to mix everything together.

An immersion blender is important because you need the speed to emulsify everything together.

Step 4: Let It Cool and Add the Final Ingredients

I let it cool down to about 100F before adding your vitamin E oil, preservative and any essential oil you choose.

Step 6: Finish

After that, I just jarred it up.

Final Thoughts

This turned out really thick and rich. I’ve been loving it for dry skin and it feels really good to use.

Note:

I don’t recommend changing this recipe. It’s formulated with specific ratios for a reason. If you do swap ingredients, make sure you understand how to properly formulate with each one.
